Norsk Hummer AS

Norsk Hummer AS initiated and is the Coordinator of the the LobsterPlant project. The company is a manufacturer of juvenile and market size European lobster.

The business activities cover development of rearing technologies, production, marketing and sale of juvenile and consume lobster. Included is also consulting services and development of technology and equipment for the lobster sea ranching industry. Norsk Hummer AS was established in 1994 and has over the last ten years made research and developed equipment and methods for lobster production. The company was capitalized in 2006. Since then they have worked out a detailed plan for industrial production of juvenile and consume lobster. A key production factor is the utilization of heated cooling water, free of charge, from Statoil’s methanol plant at Tjeldbergodden, Norway. Norsk Hummer AS is planning an industrial and international lobster industry by positioning the company as a strategic player in all parts of the value chain of the European lobster industry.

Norsk Hummer AS has participated in several R&D national projects and cooperates closely together with the Norwegian research institutes: SINTEF/Sealab on artemia and The Marine Research Institute/Flødevigen, Norway, on lobster biology. Norsk Hummer AS has extensive laboratory facilities and large scale testing capabilities, enabling the company to perform biological experiments and to study rearing technologies in full scale. When fully developed Norsk Hummer’s facilities at Tjeldbergodden will have a capacity of 4,8 mill juvenile lobsters and about 1,5 mill consume lobster per year.
