Northbay Shellfish Ltd.

Northbay Shellfish Ltd. (NBS) is specialised in innovation in the shellfish sector in the fields of hatchery design, operation and build. NBS is a leader in research and development in the European arena – leading work in areas such as marine biotoxins, shellfish diseases, carrying capacities, development of new species for aquaculture, development of hatchery techniques for a range of species, development of new materials and design for aquaculture holding systems.

NBS has set up innovative hatchery systems for lobsters, oysters, and scallops and has plans to take these innovations into work on mussels, sea urchins, and abalone. The company is also interested in working with sea-corals and combining systems which are complementary for 2 or 3 species worked together as polyculture.

Within the LobsterPlant project, NBS will especially play a key role in WP5 - Development of Water Control and Cleaning System, in relations to the work on evaluation of biological cleaning as they have experience with using biological cleaning in their systems where they produce lobster juveniles. NBS wil also contribute with input based on their experience in other parts of WP5, related to safe and effective disinfection methods for lobster larvae and live feeds.

The company expects to benefit by getting first hand knowledge of the results from the work in the project and having the possibility to implement the results from the project in at their facilities.

Northbay Shellfish Ltd. was set up in 1995 and has 2 production sites in Orkney (Scotland) which it uses to develop new innovations in holding equipment and to hold specialised broodstocks for experiments.
